MMA Training

Mixed Martial Arts or MMA Training and Conditioning are becoming such hot topics these days that we decided to dedicate a page specifically to Mixed Martial Arts - MMA Training. Everything from our favourite MMA Training DVDs to newly developed MMA Training programmes currently on the market. We'll also be posting articles from specialist MMA fight trainers such as Spida Hunter from EHP - Enhancing Human Performance, who specialises in pre fight MMA Training programmes.

MMA Fight Preperation Articles

Hurt in practice so you don't bleed in bleed in battle!
Come back in the next couple of days to read Spida Hunters article on MMA Training and fight preperation.

MMA Training DVDs

Mixed Martial Arts has become alot more than Martial Arts, it has become high tech and cutting edge training programmes from IntoCombat's high tech IHP programmes to Zach Even-Esh's Gladiator style training with his Ancient Training Methods DVD set. These are a selection of some of our favourite Mixed Martial Arts training programmes:

Jeff Monson's MMA Training Final Count Down DVD
Another gem form the guys at Into Combat, JC Santana and Rhadi Fergusson. The more I read and see from these guys, the more I realize these guys are at the top of the field of fight training and conditioning.

This is a fantastic alternative to a gym membership. Zach has hit the nail on the head when it comes to strength training for MMA and combative sports. In the past my MMA strength training has been like that of a body builder leading up to a fight. After seeing this DVD and listening to what Zach has to say I've had to revamp my MMA training.

Ian Freeman Seminar
Andrew Brown - 23 June 2008

As such his seminar covering the basics of high level MMA was excellent, especially for someone as takedown deficient as I am. After the requisite warmup, Ian got us quickly working on two takedowns from the clinch, a body lock to trip and a throw from the tie up position. Ian took the time with each pairing of students and was open to questions along the way.

Andrew Brown 17 October 2007

Attacking the legs still isn't all that common in MMA. The danger of getting your head caved in with strikes while diving for a kneebar has put a lot of fighters off. MMA Leg Attacks from Scott Sonnon is geared towards safely applying leg attacks in an MMA and submission grappling environment, without giving up good position or control of you opponent.

Xplosiv Fight Shorts rnd II
Chris McCracken 17 October 2007

I had been struggling with my one pair of fight shorts - the HCK ones I reviewed a while back. Trying to get them clean for my next training session was always a drama, since I train pretty much daily. Plus, with the weather getting warmer here on the bottom part of the world, I was going to be needing them a lot more. So, I was very pleased when I was sent a pair of XPlosiv fight shorts to review.

Xplosiv Fight Shorts
Andrew Brown 6 September 2007

It's rare that a high standard is set by a new company's first run at the market. For the most part manufacturers spend several incarnations of their products getting the mixture right. However the makers of Xplosiv shorts seemed to have jumped that step and gone straight to making a superb pair of shorts right off the bat.

San Da Punching and Clinching
Mad Dog 4 May 2007

By Sifu David Ross

I remember seeing San Da for the first Time on ESPN many years ago during the Wushu world championships. At the Time I was doing Thai Boxing and I remember how impressed I was with these guys that fought like Thai Boxers, yet threw like Judo players. It was incredibly exciting to watch, and in alot of ways really started me on the path of MMA. After being impressed with the eclectic diversity of the San Da fighters techniques, my friends and I started sparring in the back yard and would add Judo throws such as Osoto gari to our standard Muay Thai sparring.

Strength and Conditioning
Mad Dog 4 May 2007

for Combat Sports
By Tim O'Connor

Looking at a product like this it strikes me just how far the Martial Arts has come in terms of strength and conditioning training. Look at the early days of the UFC where you'd see guys getting in the octagon overweight and looking like they just came from the local pub. Now we see them as "athletes", ripped, defined and explosive in there movements and techniques. When I look at material like Tim O'Connor's DVD "Strength and Conditioning for Combat Sports" I see why.

It's much harder to review things that can be picked up for nothing, there is a tendency to judge them more lightly than something you had to part with some of your pay cheque for. With that said it's rare that one of the worlds top instructors decides to just give away one of his older DVD's "just because" and Rodney King has done just that.

Valentines Day with Fighters Review

Right now, I'm feeling pretty lucky. After a hard morning workout I arrived home to find my gear for the day set out for me and breakfast bubbling away (I eat a lot of oatmeal). I, like a lot of fighters I know, only manage to organise my life with the help of my girlfriend. While certainly not every fighter has the backup of an understanding partner, those that do are often quick to attribute at least some of their success to having a partner that understands the demands of the sport, especially at a high level.

Supplements are everywhere these days, promising every thing from decreased body fat to bulging muscles (sometimes both). Sadly most supplements are worthless and a small few are actually stupefyingly dangerous (if anyone tries to sell you a supplement with uric acid in it kick them in the face). Flexicose is none of these things; all it says on the bottle is that it will help with joint pain and limb flexibility. And it does.

Rodney King's Clinch Boxing Series: Volume 1

I love the clinch. I'm not especially good at it but it's such a versatile position to strike from that I'm learning to love it. Rodney King has gone to a lot of trouble to expand on the traditional "get the Thai Clinch, throw knees" mentality. While Rodney does cover firing knees from the various clinch positions this DVD is really geared at getting the different clinches and then going through a wide variety of alternative attacks.

Best of Clinch Boxing 2005
Andrew Brown - 12 December 2006

I have been fortunate enough to look at a large cross section of Rodney King's products and I had a hard time choosing which one to review first. I eventually chose "Best of Clinch Boxing 2005" as you get a huge amount of bang for your buck. Rodney runs his gym in South Africa, training MMA, Thai Boxing, Boxing and BJJ fighters for national and international competition. He is also a sought after guest at seminars held world wide and he has just returned from teaching a retreat with John Will in Singapore. Rodney has designed the striking program for Straight Blast Gym, and Matt Thornton goes so far as to describe Rodney "Chico" King as the best stand up coach in the game. High praise indeed, so to say my expectations for this DVD were high would be a huge understatement.

Go to most Muay Thai clubs outside of Thailand and the clinch game is pretty much bread and butter.
