I sometimes wonder if anytime I review a Grapple Arts product I should just give the grunted caveman version of a longer review. Leglocks, Kesting, Grapplearts.... Good! Buy!
I didn't think I'd get away with that either.
In Dynamic Kneebars, Stephan Kesting goes over the specific mechanics of the kneebar bit by bit; even those who love their leglocks should get something out of this portion of the DVD. As usual with Grapple Arts the production values are good. You never have to go back to try and figure out what Stephan is saying or doing. Stephan himself is an excellent instructor; he knows how to teach just as well as he knows the moves he is trying to get across to you.
Stephan also looks at the various different ways to secure your opponents leg. I got a lot out of this section as it's not always clear as to the best way to grip you opponent's leg (under your head, under your arm, triangle grip?). I found that Stephan's triangle hold for kneebars is my favourite but they are all worth looking at in detail.
Anyone looking at this DVD should bear in mind that this wasn't called Dynamic Leglocks for a good reason. Dynamic Kneebars is really all about the kneebar. Every setup, every mechanic for the knee bar is covered. Stephan has also included a series of re-counters (counters to counters) that add a whole new dimension to your lower body grappling game. It certainly helped me, my habit was to try and take a leglock and, if I was thwarted, just abandon the lock and got to trying to reclaim my position. With the re-counters, you have far more options and can effectively keep attacking, even if your opponent has effectively reclaimed his leg.
This definitely gets two gloved thumbs up, while its ideal for people who are just getting into the leglock game, I would surprised to find anyone who had seen everything this DVD had to offer (the reverse spin kneebar alone is worth picking this up for). You get this DVD from www.grapplearts.com and at 44.95 US its better value for money than many other, larger sets that try to cover more ground. While you're at Grapplearts I recommend taking a look at Stephan's excellent collection of free articles, especially the ones regarding weight cutting.
